History of Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is a town located on the extreme southern Atlantic Ocean coast of North Carolina. So “extreme” in fact that the beach borders South Carolina so you can walk on the beach from North to South Carolina.

It was originally settled in the early 1800s by a group of farmers and fishermen. The town grew slowly in the early years, but it began to develop rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s as a popular tourist destination.

The town was originally called “Sunset Point” because of its beautiful sunsets. The name was changed to “Sunset Beach” in the 1960s.

Today, Sunset Beach is a thriving resort town with a population of about 2,000 people. It is known for its beautiful beaches, calm waters, and family-friendly atmosphere.

Geography of Sunset Beach

The town of Sunset Beach is mostly on the mainland. The beach is located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). It’s accessed by use of a bridge over the ICW and is about 10 miles long and 2 miles wide.
